For the sake of keeping this blog alive after finals have passed (orz), I’m going to go over my despair of this season, particularly Minami-ke Okawari and Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-.
Ok, so I’m not really disappointed with the 2nd season of Minami-ke. Just like the title hints, it’s generally more of the same. However, it’s as if you were asking for thirds when all of the sudden, the cook takes out some of the good stuff and adds in other crap, making it a less appetizing. What is shown now makes me yearn for the old days of Minami-ke.
| Good | Bad |
| Cleaner animation/character design | slightly muscular; makes them look older at times |
| New cool OP/ED themes | lack of SENSEIII/NINOMIYA-KUUUUUUUUN |
| Hosaka is moar buff and manly (lol) | Much less screen time for him |
| Bath scenes galore(?) | Generally more unfunny that previous season |
I can’t say that Okawari is absolutely horrible, but if you thought the show will eventually get better, it won’t. Hosoda Naoto is the Director for Okawari, and he did Shuffle! Memories, and we all know how THAT went… Quite the let down. I’ll still watch this occasionally, but not as religiously as I did the first season.
The next [bigger] disappointement was Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-. Wow, have anime seriously dropped to this level? Instead of a continuation the dark, badassery that the orphans of the dangerous streets of Italy brought in the first season, we get moe-fied plotless garb? A terrible surprise from the director of Ghost Hunt (then again, the chief director hasn’t done directed anything recent or within this genre of anime).
Even though I’m grading this all from the first episode, I don’t know if I’ll have the will to watch any more of the season if it keeps going on this direction. I mean, look at Henrietta. She’s turned from a cute, naive girl to a lolipedophin clone with a jiji-complex, not to mention that her new voice actress is way too cute than she should be. And Rico, wow it’s as if she never feared Jean at all and is super cheerful all of the sudden. I think the only relatively normal girl is Claes, and she only appeared at the end.
Not only were characters going insane, but animation was sappy. If I watched the first season and this season side to side, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first season is better, which would be sad since it was animated in nearly 5 years ago. The OP/ED themes are so… Japanesey. I guess I miss the Delgadoes too much as their theme; it fit so much better, too.
If you’ve never watched Gunslinger Girl, by all means do not watch this one before the first one. Then you will realize my despair.
At least the other two sequals I’m watching, ARIA the Origination and Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, haven’t changed a bit, which is how it should be.

the part when rico look cheerful while walking on the railing is part of the manga too. Or maybe there are other factors yu’ll talking about. Read the manga ^^ It’s much better.

agree with the gunslinger girl being a disappointment, but in terms of the art. The story plot will keep me glue to it >.<.
